Leeches

What if the years

too heavy to carry

weigh us down

like great anchors

rusted and cracked

drown us in the

blackness

of  clumsy words and tired looks

with my teeth

in twos

and in threes

I’ll break us free

I will forever sing your song

sign your permission slips

salt your leeches

until they fall away from you

undone

in dehydrated bliss

for your blood is sweet

and such a death is a foretaste

of heaven that unfolds for me

like blankets warm from the dryer

on the coldest winter night
